My approach
I firmly believe that studying English helps students to become empathetic, critically minded, and imaginative individuals in a rapidly changing world. I also think that reading literature can help us to deal with challenges in our daily lives, and so I do my best to support my students to become keen readers.
At the same time, I do realise that the subject of English can feel daunting, and may not be a source of pleasure for everyone, especially if independent reading is not part of a student’s daily routine.
With this in mind, I aim to meet each student wherever they are in their learning journey. I take time to get to know each student, including their hobbies and interests outside of the classroom. This encourages a friendly and relaxed learning environment, and it also enables me to tailor both my lessons and my independent reading recommendations to each student.
Sessions are bespoke and designed around each student’s needs. Depending on the level and focus, sessions may include:
Reviewing set texts, core topics, and thematic exploration
Reading and discussing set texts
Discussing texts that are read for pleasure
Supporting independent reading habits
Developing skills in literary analysis and close reading
Refining critical, creative, and persuasive writing
Integrating historical context and literary criticism
Revising and refining exam technique
Setting mini-homeworks to maintain momentum

About me
When I’m not teaching, I love going for walks in the local area, attending London’s theatres, or visiting an art gallery. I also practice yoga regularly and am a qualified ski instructor. Unsurprisingly, reading is one of my main hobbies! My favourite novelist is Thomas Hardy, but I have recently become captivated by Katherine Rundell’s Impossible Creatures series. Her books are ostensibly written for children but adults often find themselves equally entranced by the world of wonder, fantasy, and excitement that Rundell has created.
